Terracotta Coloured Korean Oversized Layered Smock Abaya
Sizes: M, L, L (relaxed), XL, XL (relaxed), 2XL, 2XL (relaxed)
Opacity: 3
Sleeve: Cropped
Elasticity: This fabric has a minimal elasticity. While it will stretch with the wearer, it is designed to be worn as a loose garment, so wearing it tight enough to stretch will dramatically reduce its opacity. As such, we recommend buying this smock in a larger size to maintain its opacity.
South Korean traditional clothing is known collectively as Hanbok. It is a range of clothes that are made quite square and have wide pants or large high waisted skirts that ensure a square modest look that does not reveal the shape of the wearer’s body.
This traditional style of dress is still very much loved in South Korea and has inspired a mainstream youth culture to adopt a modern take on this traditional modest fashion standard. This modern aesthetic has been spread worldwide through K Pop youth music and film stars.
As such, we have seen a huge rise in the availability of South Korean modest urban wear in the West, and one of our absolute favourite garments here at Myriad Modest Fashion is the South Korean Smock! This is a square cut dress that is deliberately oversized, so it does not sit tightly against the form of the body wearing it. It can be made of heavy cotton or wool for the winter or, like this one, a light weight cotton for summer (this cotton fabric with its irregular plisse has commonly been called ‘cheesecloth’ in Australia, even though it is a much tighter weave than real cheesecloth). These garments can be layered with pants and undergarment shirts or singlets, and often come in bright whites (a traditional colour choice in South Korea), or saturated solid colours like this warming terracotta tone, making this smock sophisticated enough to wear to a cafe or workplace as well as being a comfortable outfit to wear at home or to pop down to the local shops.
So the question becomes, are you youthful and trendy enough to rock a modest, North Korean smock? We think all our beautiful modest dressers are definitely capable of enjoying this modest clothing style. And don’t forget, such smocks pair brilliantly with open abayas too!
Thanks South Korea, we just adore your homegrown, traditionally inspired, youthful, modest style and the way you are sharing it with the world! It’s just beautiful and shows just how diverse modest fashion is! 😘
