Summer Shirt Dress with Ikat Inspired Print
Sizes: M, M (relaxed), L, XL, XL (relaxed)
Opacity: 3
Sleeve: Fixed
Elasticity: This fabric has a moderate amount of elasticity as is common in jersey fabrics (this is the material t-shirts are usually made from). However, this is a very thin jersey which is what allows it to be a cool summer dress. As such, any significant stretching causes the dress to rapidly lose its opacity, and as it is a light colour, it can easily become very transparent. As such, we recommend buying this dress in a larger size rather than depending on its elasticity if opacity is an important factor to your modest style.
Ikat (pronounced e-cot), is a fibre dying technique common to many cultures around the world. In this form of dying, a resist (such as wax) is applied to the threads and then the thread is dyed. This allows for the production of multicoloured threads that are then used to weave patterned fabric. The fabric produced from these threads tends to have a blurred edge to it because it is extremely difficult to line up the dyed fibres when it is weaved. The less blurry the pattern the more expensive it is as this is a sign of the exceptional craftsmanship of the weaver.
While many cultures use Ikat threads to produces striped or simple geometric patterns, the Uzbeks use it to create large, bold patterns often based on circles or circular flourishes. It is this Uzbek style that this summer shirt dress is inspired by. Naturally, this shirt dress is simply a printed jersey fabric, as real Uzbek ikat designed fabric is not only expensive due to the process and craftsmanship involved in its production, but it has recently been recognised and utilised in European fashion houses such as Oscar de la Renta and Gucci - putting it well out of the price range of average people.
However, this fabric production and the beauty of the patterns produced by the amazing craftspeople of Uzbekistan are too great an addition to modest dress to ignore, and so Myriad Modest Fashion have provided garments inspired by the amazing beauty created in the glorious part of the world! Because how could we miss the opportunity to celebrate the aesthetic beauty delivered to us by the amazing work of the Uzbeks? 😍
Please note - this garment tends to look off-white when photographed. However in person, it is more of a buttery cream colour. The images of the garment taken on the white mannequin provide a much better indication of the true colour of this shirt dress than the images of the dress on the model. However, the images on the model effectively demonstrate the best way to wear this shirt dress - with brutal coloured palazzo pants or perhaps with a smart pair of boot leg jeans?
Hint: You will note that this shirt dress, like many shirt dresses and blouses, has quite a deep, open V neck. To maintain your modest standards you may wish to wear a square necked shirt or singlet under this dress. However, another option that I choose to use at times, is to use pretty hijab pins (effectively these are very small brooches that look like a stud earring as they have a very short bayonet and a large flat stopper that prevents them from sticking into the wearer), as buttons, spaced evenly up the hem of the neckline so it is held closed to a point I am more comfortable with. I particularly love to use imitation fresh water Pearl hijab pins for this purpose. It is a pretty and fun way to individualize a top while keeping it cool and modest.
Let us know if you give this a try and it works for you. Also, check out our range of accessories as we may have the hijab pins you are looking for?
