Elasticity: This fabric has a minimal amount of elasticity which allows it stretch comfortably with the body as you move. However, we would not recommend depending on this elasticity to provide you with more size in this garment as it would become quite fitted.

Like so much great fashion, the shirt dress was a response to need. It was initially a totally utilitarian garment worn by nurses, who needed a neat, clean, fuss-free garment that was also modest and allowed them to move quickly and freely in order to complete their exceptionally physical and fast paced job. (If you can’t tell, we here at Myriad Modest Fashion have the highest respect for our nurses and all people in care professions and we are great proponents of seeing them receive the cultural respect and financial remunerations much more in line with their vital role in our society. As such, the first shirt dresses in the West were simple straight garments with a very minor A-line cut to the skirt or sometimes no cut, making a straight dress. However, the inherent beauty in the design was soon identified by designers and by the 1950s, shirt dresses were gracing the fashion runways of the world. This popularity, and post World War II economic recovery saw the shirt dresses of the 1950s developed with broad A-Line skirts (as in this example).

Interestingly, this modern take on this era defining garment has actually given away the full body row of buttons, but has maintained the wide skirt, cinched in waist and large collar to produce a dress that is still sensible and tailored enough to function as work attire, but feminine and beautiful enough to embody the retro 50s vibe of its predecessors.
