The first abayas, as identified by historians, appeared in Mesopotamia around 4000 years ago. It seems that from this time through to around 80 years ago, open abaya (robe style dresses held shut with a tie) were a common type of abaya, along with long rectangles of cloth that were draped over the head and tied around the waist. It was only really after the introduction of abaya to Saudi Arabia that the popularity of the closed abaya developed. This was a loose garment that could be pulled over the head like a dress, rather than tied around the body.

But between these two opposite forms are the closed abaya that fully open via a front access. This could be achieved via buttons down the front of the abaya or a zipper down the front. Not wanting to disrupt the elongating shape of the abaya, many of these buttoned or zippered abaya covered the closing mechanism with a neat hem. This created the visual effect of drawing a colour coordinated stripe down the middle of the abaya. It is this tradition that this gorgeously sweet, feminine abaya represents. The effect is a loose garment with a waist wide enough to easily cover any type of clothing.
