Description: The Maya were a Mesoamerican culture that existed between circa 750BC and 1500AD. The ancient civilisation existed in the modern nations of Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador. While this ancient civilisation no longer exist, ethnically Mayan people most certainly do exist and continue to engage with some of the artistic and lifestyle features of the ancient civilisation as part of their modern cultural expressions.

This abaya depicts the mathematically inspired art from the early and classical periods of the Mayan civilisation. The ancient Mayan’s were mathematicians, with a glyphic based writing system and a great interest in time and astrology. They had a deep and intricate religious system (that included animal and human sacrifice), and much of their art was focused on depicting narratives from their faith system as well as their daily lives. However, their art was not purely for decorative or religious purposes. They also used art to depict the passing of time, and the circle was used in the depiction of various calendars. Priests or artists would often draw or carve these circular calendars onto the walls of temples. Geometric symbols would be used around them to count the passing of time (such as seasons, days, years etc.) This abaya has a design inspired by this detailed and beautiful mathematically based art form. It also depicts the gradually reducing building technique utilised by the Mayans to create their amazing palace and temple structures on high pyramids.
